Former UFC champion Conor McGregor thinks the UFC isn’t keen on booking his return against Michael Chandler anymore.
McGregor and Chandler squared off as opposing coaches on the newest season of The Ultimate Fighter, which wrapped up filming earlier this year. The finale fights will take place at UFC 292 in Boston later this month.
Chandler had called out McGregor for the better part of a year when it was announced he would compete alongside McGregor on TUF. The two are expected to fight at a later date, although nothing has been formally announced by the promotion.
Despite the original link to Chandler, McGregor has pivoted on the matchup in recent weeks after Justin Gaethje’s win at UFC 291. Gaethje, the new BMF titleholder, has been a target of McGregor on social media since his knockout win over Dustin Poirier.
Conor McGregor Says UFC Wants Other Opponents For Octagon Return
In a recent tweet, McGregor answered one follower who asked him about his level of interest in the Chandler fight.
“I’ll do it if they want, no prob. I don’t think they want him no more tho,” McGregor claimed. “There’s loads of juicy fights around and my return date is my return date. I never gave a fuck about who it was. Ever. I’ll fight anyone. I’ll even fly them to me, ask malinaggi. Flown in and bet around.”
McGregor hasn’t fought since a doctor’s stoppage loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. He has been rehabilitating ever since, although has been a target of controversy amidst his ongoing absence from the USADA testing pool.
Despite recent comments by McGregor, Chandler has remained confident that the Irishman will meet him in the Octagon for his next fight. Chandler is looking to get back on track after a loss to Poirier at UFC 281.
UFC President Dana White hasn’t expressed disinterest in making the McGregor vs. Chandler fight happen, but McGregor’s claims might hint at the UFC exploring other avenues for his long-awaited return.
